The
History
“Le Volpaie" is an old Tuscan farmhouse perched up on
a hillside that has a stunning view and is close to cortona, a Medieval
hill town with roots that stretch back into Prehistory. The name
of this property is taken from the nearby stream (the foxes den)
wich in turn got its name rfrom the local foxes thet favoured the
area. the house was planned with the living area made up of a kitchen
and two rooms on the first floor where the sharecroper farmers lived
and the animals stables undernealth at ground level. The oldest
part of the building goes back to the 16th century.
The house was lived in by a series of sharecroping families until
the last few left the land in 1965. Thus the farmhouse was left
abandoned for 25 years until the present owner fell in love with
it one October evening and decided to restore the structure. The
restoration has created an extremely attractive and elegant home,
complete with antique furniture down to the last finishing touches.
Six people can comfortably stay at "Le Volpaie".
